Ensuring Inclusivity in Primary Schools: A Focus on Diverse Backgrounds

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has highlighted a growing concern about the socio-economic diversity within primary schools. While many institutions serve students from various backgrounds, some schools are predominantly reflective of their local communities, which can limit exposure to diverse experiences.

“This situation arises partly due to the current home-school distance policy used in P1 registration, where priority is given to citizenship first and then to the proximity of the home to the school when balloting is required,” explained a representative from the MOE.

Minister for Education, Desmond Lee, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in schools during a recent press briefing at Parliament House. “We strive to keep our schools open and welcoming, allowing our children to build friendships and connections that extend beyond their immediate social circles,” he stated. “They will encounter a variety of perspectives, learn to bridge differences, and foster mutual understanding.”

The MOE is currently reviewing its policies to enhance access and promote inclusivity across primary schools, taking into account input from parents, school leaders, and alumni. This initiative seeks to ensure that schools embody a welcoming environment for families from all walks of life.

Mr. Lee acknowledged that while there is general consensus on the need for primary schools to remain inclusive, opinions vary on the most effective ways to achieve this goal. The ongoing discussions reflect a commitment to creating a balanced approach that embraces different viewpoints in the quest for accessibility.
