Calls for Enhanced Heatstroke Protections for Outdoor Workers in Hong Kong

In response to soaring temperatures, labour union leaders in Hong Kong are advocating for enhanced protections for outdoor workers, including mandated heatstroke prevention equipment. These measures aim to safeguard workers who are exposed to extreme heat conditions, especially in the wake of record-breaking temperatures this month.

Union Demands for Employer Accountability

On Saturday, union representatives highlighted the necessity for employers to supply outdoor workers with essential safety gear, particularly fan-cooled jackets. Chau Sze-kit, the chairman of the Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union, emphasized that these jackets—which can cost over HK$1,000 (around US$128) each—represent a significant financial burden for many workers.

Chau urged that it should become a requirement for employers to provide these cooling jackets similarly to how they supply safety helmets. He indicated that workers have reported that fan-cooled jackets are among the most effective forms of personal protective equipment available, as they can significantly help reduce body temperature in hot conditions.

Add Heatstroke to Occupational Disease List

In addition to advocating for equipment provisions, the unions are calling for heatstroke to be classified as a statutory occupational disease. This addition would streamline the compensation claims process for workers suffering from heat-related illnesses, ensuring they receive the necessary support and recognition for the risks they face in extreme heat.
