Major Transit Development Unveiled in Hong Kong
On Sunday, Hong Kong celebrated the long-anticipated opening of the Yau Ma Tei section of the Central Kowloon Bypass. This infrastructural milestone will introduce eight bus routes, including three brand-new lines, starting Monday. The initiative promises to significantly reduce travel time during peak hours—bringing the journey between West and East Kowloon down from 30 minutes to a mere five.
A Triumph of Engineering
During the inauguration ceremony, Mable Chan, Secretary for Transport and Logistics, referred to this project as a remarkable engineering feat and a prime example of the resilient “Hong Kong Spirit.” She acknowledged the complexity and challenges faced throughout the construction process.
Continuing Progress Despite Hardship
Chan emphasized the importance of mutual support and ongoing development within the community, particularly following the devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po that claimed at least 161 lives. “Our society has recently been deeply pained by this tragic event. While our hearts remain heavy, we must ensure that our progression toward recovery does not halt. Economic development, especially in infrastructure, is essential,” she stated.
She added, “We must ensure it acts as the lifeline for the community, allowing us to thrive harmoniously.”
Key Features of the New Transport Corridor
Spanning 4.7 kilometers (approximately 3 miles), this new transport corridor includes a 3.9-kilometer, three-lane, two-way tunnel connecting the Kai Tak Development Area to Kowloon Bay and Yau Ma Tei. Chan described it as one of the city’s most technically challenging infrastructure projects to date.
