Escalating Evacuations: Iranians Seek Safety in Azerbaijan

In the wake of increasing violence in Iran, hundreds of individuals are making their way to Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani government has opened the Astara border crossing, facilitating a safe exit for both its citizens and foreign nationals caught in the turmoil.

Welcoming Refugees

Since the border’s reopening, Azerbaijan has welcomed citizens from over 19 different countries. Authorities in the southern city of Astara are diligently processing evacuations, ensuring safe passage for those affected by the ongoing conflict.

Gulsiber Alamkhonzoda, a citizen of Tajikistan, expressed her gratitude for the hospitality she received at the border: “We were in Tehran. It was 7 hours to the border, and we waited until they gave us the visa. Thank you very much for the hospitality. We were received very well; they are very hospitable people.”

A Path to Safety

The Azerbaijani initiative presents Iranian nationals with a chance to seek safer alternatives and reconnect with family members abroad. Masood, another evacuee, explained, “I was in Tehran the first day. I was in Tehran but just come to the Gilan, the city close to here. My family is living in Australia. That’s why I’m just leaving from here, heading to Istanbul, and then to Australia.”

Concerns About the Situation

While the prevailing conditions in Iran have not yet reached a catastrophic level, they are deteriorating rapidly. Masood pointed out, “So far it’s not as bad as we can imagine, but it’s going to get worse every day. I don’t know what’s happening.”

Refugees from Pakistan and Europe

A significant number of Pakistani nationals in Iran have also opted to travel north to seek safety in Azerbaijan. Diplomats from Pakistan have joined the exodus as well. Deputy Head of Mission Ismat Hassan Sial stated, “The situation is fluid. It is moving very fast. It’s difficult to predict exactly. But for the safety of family, our government has decided to move some people out of Tehran. I, on account of being an officer but also being a mother, was evacuated. So I am moving to Azerbaijan.”

European nationals, including Serbian and Slovak diplomats, have also found refuge in Azerbaijan. Discussions about evacuation efforts continue at the bilateral level, with Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov recently speaking with the EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, to coordinate the exit of European nationals amid the ongoing crisis.

Conclusion

The situation in Iran is prompting a significant number of individuals to seek refuge in Azerbaijan. As the political climate continues to shift, Azerbaijan’s proactive approach to facilitating evacuations provides crucial support for those in need.
