This New Year’s Eve, Hong Kong will celebrate with vibrant festivities in Central, including road closures starting at 2 PM to accommodate a countdown event at the Chater Road pedestrian zone. Following a tragic fire incident in Tai Po, the traditional fireworks display will be replaced with an exciting lineup of music and light shows, aiming to spread positivity and hope.

Embracing “New Hope, New Beginning”

Mason Hung Chung-hing, the leading advisor for event and product development at the Hong Kong Tourism Board, shared that the theme for this year’s event is “New Hope, New Beginning.” He expressed hopes that the celebration would promote a spirit of renewal among attendees.

“We are introducing a new format that blends live performances with multimedia light displays to radiate positive energy, compassion, and peaceful aspirations,” Hung mentioned.

Star-Studded Performances Ahead

The countdown event will feature a variety of performances, including popular Australian soft rock duo Air Supply, alongside local talents such as Jay Fung and Cloud Wan, a children’s choir, and the Hong Kong Police Band.

A Dazzling Midnight Spectacle

As the clock strikes midnight, eight iconic landmarks in Central will dazzle spectators with a three-minute light show, which will also function as a countdown clock lasting twenty seconds. Additionally, live broadcast zones will be set up at Chater Garden and Edinburgh Place for those wishing to join the festivities in real time.

The countdown clock will also be projected onto the facade of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere throughout the city.

Respecting Remembrance

When questioned about including a memorial for the victims of the Wang Fuk Court fire, Hung noted that although the board considered the idea, they ultimately decided not to incorporate an official tribute during the event.
