In a recent statement from his hospital room, Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has officially endorsed his son Flavio’s bid for the presidency in 2026. The announcement came following a scheduled hernia operation, which, according to doctors, was successful.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes granted Bolsonaro temporary release from prison, where he is serving a lengthy 27-year sentence for attempting to orchestrate a coup. During his hospital stay, security measures were enforced, prohibiting any computers or mobile devices in the vicinity.

Flavio Bolsonaro, 44, has expressed a desire to carry on his father’s conservative legacy as he aims to challenge current leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the elections on October 4. “With the commitment of not allowing the popular will to be silenced, I make the decision to nominate Flavio Bolsonaro as a pre-candidate for the presidency in 2026,” Jair Bolsonaro stated in a letter, which Flavio read aloud at the hospital’s entrance.

Health Challenges and Continued Recovery

At 70 years old, the former leader has encountered numerous health issues since narrowly escaping a fatal stabbing during the 2018 campaign. Over the years, he has undergone more than six abdominal surgeries.

The recent procedure lasted around three hours and was described as routine and uneventful by his attending physician, Claudio Birolini. Bolsonaro is expected to remain in the hospital for recovery, projected to last between five to seven days, and the doctor reported that he was already awake and resting in his room.
