Violence Erupts in Dhaka Following Death of Youth Leader Sharif Osman Hadi

Recent unrest has swept through the streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh, after the tragic death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who succumbed to injuries from an assassination attempt while being treated in Singapore. Protests Ignite After Hadi’s Death

Thousands of individuals took to the capital’s streets early Friday morning, expressing their outrage and calling for the apprehension of Hadi’s assailants. The 32-year-old activist was a prominent figure in the country’s pro-democracy movements and was slated to contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2026.

In the wake of Hadi’s death, chaos ensued in Dhaka, with reports of several buildings, including those housing major publications, being set ablaze. Eyewitness accounts revealed that staff members were trapped inside at the time.

On December 12, Hadi was shot as he left a mosque. After being airlifted for urgent medical care to Singapore, he unfortunately did not survive the attack, passing away on Thursday.

Widespread Violence and Public Outcry

As news of Hadi’s passing spread, incidents of arson erupted across Dhaka, impacting prominent structures such as the Daily Star and Prothom Alo. Reporters working for these outlets found themselves in peril as flames engulfed their offices, leading to calls for immediate rescue.

Zyma Islam, a journalist at the Daily Star, shared her harrowing experience on social media, pleading for help from inside the burning facility. Fire officials eventually managed to control the fire, but there were still crew members trapped inside.

Protesters converged on several key locations, including the residence of India’s deputy ambassador. There were attempts to stage a sit-in, but police responded with teargas to disperse the gathering.

In a separate development, the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, acknowledged Hadi’s demise as a significant loss for the country. “Our journey towards democracy cannot be obstructed by fear and violence,” Yunus remarked during a televised address. The government has also called for special prayers at mosques and declared a half-day of mourning to honor Hadi.

Authorities have initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators, offering a financial reward for crucial information that could lead to their capture.

Bangladesh is set to hold parliamentary elections in February, where citizens will vote for representatives for 300 seats, alongside another 50 through a women’s quota system.
