According to Zamboanga City’s mayor, Khymer Adan Olaso, the shooter entered the school armed with a high-powered firearm and a .45 caliber pistol. “In the video, we see that he first shot at the teacher who was sitting at a table,” Olaso remarked during an interview with local media. He noted that the shooter initially missed the teacher before moving on to another room, where he fatally shot a student and injured two others before taking his own life.

Reports indicate that a video of the shooting was reportedly live-streamed on Facebook, creating a chaotic scene as it spread through social media. The school administration confirmed two fatalities arising from the incident.

Response from University Officials

University President Ernald Andal assured the public that the situation was under control, stating there was no ongoing threat and that there had been no additional injuries reported. He emphasized the institution’s commitment to collaborating with authorities and pledged to prioritize student safety. “We do not want any of these incidents to occur,” Andal stated.

A Pattern of Violence

This recent shooting comes on the heels of a similar tragedy in June at a public high school in Tacloban City, where three students were killed and approximately 20 others injured when two individuals opened fire on the campus. In the aftermath, the Philippine government imposed a ban on an online game, Gorebox, which was found to have been played by at least one of the alleged shooters.

Furthermore, the Department of Education highlighted the urgent need for enhanced support measures to avert a potential “copycat phenomenon” as incidents of violence, including bomb threats and stabbings, have continued to emerge across various educational settings.
