Hins Cheung to Mentor Youth in Special Rehabilitation Project

Hong Kong Cantopop singer Hins Cheung, known for his earlier support of social movements in the city, is set to take a leading role in a special rehabilitation initiative. This project, organized by the Security Bureau, will mentor young individuals who were arrested during the 2019 anti-government protests, guiding them on visits to mainland China to witness its development and prosperity.

On Saturday, Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung shared that the ongoing project aims to assist approximately 7,000 individuals who were arrested but not prosecuted during the protests over the past two years. The initiative reflects a broader effort to bridge gaps and foster understanding through firsthand experiences.

A New Chapter for Cheung

In a recent interview with a local newspaper, Cheung expressed profound remorse for his past statements and actions, emphasizing his commitment to lead youth exchange programs to the mainland in the coming months. The 45-year-old artist acknowledged his earlier impulsiveness and admitted to not having a comprehensive grasp of the complexities surrounding the social climate. He recognized that some of his previous performances may have caused the public to question his patriotism.

Reflecting on the Past

Cheung’s history of activism includes supporting protests against national education in 2012 and participating in the 2014 Occupy Central movement, where he famously sang the movement’s theme song alongside Anthony Wong Chau-sang. He stated, “I know many people have questioned my love for my country and Hong Kong because of this. Today, I offer my sincere apology.”
