Escalating Tensions: Afghanistan Thwarts Pakistani Airstrikes on Bagram Airbase
In a significant escalation of cross-border hostilities, Afghanistan has reported that it successfully countered an airstrike attempt by Pakistan targeting the Bagram airbase, previously a U.S. military outpost located north of Kabul. This confrontation marks the continuation of intense clashes between the two neighboring countries, now extending into a fourth consecutive day.
Recent Developments in the Conflict
The situation began to deteriorate last Thursday when Afghanistan initiated attacks along the shared border, provoking a military response from Pakistan both on the ground and from the air. Pakistan has since declared its intent to engage in what it describes as an “open war” against Afghanistan.
On Sunday, officials from the Parwan province, where the Bagram airbase is situated, announced that multiple Pakistani military jets intruded into Afghan airspace around 5 a.m. and launched an attempt to bombard the base. Afghan forces reportedly retaliated using “anti-aircraft and missile defense systems,” successfully preventing the attack. There has yet to be any official response from Pakistan regarding Afghanistan’s claims.
Failed Diplomacy and Ongoing Hostilities
Despite ongoing diplomatic interventions aimed at achieving a ceasefire, involving countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, efforts to quell the violence have not materialized. This rising conflict has raised alarms among the international community, particularly as regional militant groups such as al-Qaida and Islamic State continue to operate in the area, posing additional security concerns.
Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of neglecting to address militant threats that have resulted in violent attacks within its borders. The Taliban government in Afghanistan has categorically denied these allegations, even as many of the assaults have been attributed to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant group that has increased its activity since the Taliban regained control in Kabul in 2021.
Casualties and Military Actions
On Friday, Pakistan acknowledged conducting airstrikes on several key Afghan cities, including Kabul and Kandahar, the latter being the home of Afghanistan’s supreme leader. In Kabul, the heightened military presence became evident with the establishment of additional security checkpoints in the city center.
Deputy spokesperson for the Taliban, Hamdullah Fitrat, claimed that Pakistani military actions have resulted in the deaths of at least 36 civilians across various provinces since the clashes erupted. Pakistan has not publicly responded to these assertions. Local reports from Khost and Nangarhar provinces indicate that skirmishes between the armed forces of both nations persisted throughout Sunday.
Additionally, reports from the Nangarhar province information department confirmed overnight confrontations at the Torkham border crossing, a critical entry point for Afghans returning from Pakistan. A military spokesperson noted that intense fights raged overnight in Paktia province, with Afghan officials stating that their offensive last Thursday was a retaliation against prior airstrikes attributed to civilian casualties, which Pakistan claimed targeted militants.
Shifts in Military Strategy
Analysts have noted that the recent spike in hostilities signifies a major shift in Pakistan’s military strategy, as its airstrikes have now directly targeted Afghan government facilities, diverging from previous operations that focused primarily on militant strongholds.
According to Pakistan’s information minister, Attaullah Tarar, airstrikes have affected 46 locations throughout Afghanistan since the operations commenced. He further claimed that Pakistani military actions have resulted in the deaths of 415 Afghan soldiers, while Pakistan reported 12 of its own soldiers lost. Conversely, Fitrat has stated that over 80 Pakistani soldiers were killed, with 27 military posts captured; earlier reports from the Afghan government put its military death toll at 13.
It remains challenging to independently verify casualty figures provided by both sides amidst the ongoing conflict.
