New COVID-19 Vaccine Now Available in Singapore
SINGAPORE: Starting Friday, January 2, the JN.1 Novavax/Nuvaxovid COVID-19 vaccine will be accessible at selected general practitioner (GP) clinics as part of the national vaccination program, continuing until May 31, 2026.
What You Need to Know About the JN.1 Novavax Vaccine
The JN.1 Novavax vaccine presents an alternative to the already available LP.8.1 Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, which began distribution in October 2025. According to the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA), both vaccine types are anticipated to provide enhanced protection against severe cases of COVID-19.
Administering the Vaccine
This vaccine was previously offered at select GP clinics until April 30, following approval from the Health Sciences Authority for individuals aged 12 and older. The CDA emphasizes that individuals who haven’t received an additional COVID-19 vaccine dose in the past year can benefit from the JN.1 Novavax vaccine, as immunity to the virus tends to wane over time. A booster in either 2025 or 2026 can help bolster protection against severe illness.
This recommendation applies to anyone who received either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines, or the Novavax JN.1 vaccine during 2024 or 2025.
Timing for Your Vaccination
For those opting for the JN.1 Novavax vaccine as a booster, it’s advised to wait at least one year and a minimum of five months after their last vaccine dose. Starting Friday, individuals can schedule their vaccination appointments.
Availability and Future Recommendations
It’s important for those interested in the vaccine to do so before May 31, 2026, since the manufacturer will cease supply of the JN.1 vaccine formulation once current stocks run out. Following this date, the JN.1 Novavax vaccine will no longer be part of the national vaccination program, although the LP.8.1 Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines will remain available.
The national vaccination program in Singapore continues to offer COVID-19 vaccinations free of charge for all eligible individuals.
The CDA has warned that COVID-19 waves will persist and may lead to severe health issues, particularly among older adults and those with underlying health conditions. To improve protection against such risks, they recommend that everyone, particularly those aged 60 and above, as well as vulnerable individuals or residents of aged care facilities, stay current with their vaccinations, much like their approach to the flu vaccine.
