In a troubling escalation of conflict, Cambodia has accused Thailand of intensifying assaults on disputed border territories, even as officials from both nations engage in multi-day discussions aimed at resolving ongoing hostilities. This month, long-standing tensions between the neighboring countries reignited, leading to a breakdown of previous ceasefire agreements and claiming over 40 lives, according to official reports. The conflict has forced approximately one million individuals from their homes, seeking safety from the violence.

As Cambodian and Thai representatives continue their talks at a border checkpoint, scheduled meetings include defense ministers from each country, set for Saturday. However, fresh accusations emerged early Friday when Cambodia’s defense ministry reported that Thailand had conducted extensive bombardments in the Banteay Meanchey province.

According to Cambodian officials, from 6:08 AM to 7:15 AM, Thai military forces deployed F-16 fighter jets that dropped around 40 bombs on the Chok Chey village area. This military action further inflamed the already volatile situation.

Mutual Blame for Escalating Hostilities

Contrary to Cambodia’s claims, Thai media has reported that Cambodian forces initiated heavy shelling overnight in Sa Kaeo province, causing damage to several homes. Both governments are trading accusations for sparking the renewed violence, which has spread to almost all provinces along their shared border.

Each country asserts it is acting in self-defense and points fingers at the other for harming civilians in the process. Past attempts to broker peace, including efforts by the US, China, and Malaysia to mediate a ceasefire in July, have proven short-lived, indicating a fragile path to stability.

Earlier on Friday, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet took to social media to reveal his conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They exchanged views on potential strategies for achieving a ceasefire along the tumultuous Cambodia-Thailand border.
